Meet Mary Ann Cleary, LCSW, CADC

Mary Ann is experienced in working with adolescents, college and graduate students, and adults at various life stages. Her areas of focus include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, acute stress and PTSD related issues, personality and emotion regulation challenges, eating disorders and body image concerns, and substance use disorders. She works frequently with clients experiencing challenges related to gender and sexuality, interpersonal and sexual trauma, grief and loss, family and relationship issues, multicultural themes and adjustments, and other diverse background and identity concerns.

Warm and engaging, Mary Ann integrates interpersonal, self-exploration, problem-solving, and strengths based approaches, and is guided by client centered, relational-cultural, and intersectionality based principles in her collaborative work with clients. She incorporates strategies and tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychodynamic, and relational therapy. For clients that need support with daily tasks and stress management, Mary Ann utilizes education and skill building approaches, such as mindfulness and grounding, organization and time management, finding resources and supports, and cultivating satisfying and productive activities and routines.

In addition to individual and family oriented therapy, Mary Ann has expertise leading intensive outpatient groups for managing substance use challenges, coping with anxiety and building social confidence, using writing as a tool for exploration and communication, as well as other interpersonal support groups. She has worked in supervisory, training, quality assurance, and program development roles at various levels of care – such as, early intervention, outpatient, intensive outpatient, inpatient, and residential. Mary Ann is certified in alcohol and other drug abuse counseling (CADC), and earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago.
